It's the Backstory
It is the backstory of the two leads that makes the plot interesting. We found out why he wants to make money and it is not for greedy self interest. She has a father that did not treat her nor her mother well hence why she is so distant from him and generally a cold fish all around. It is a wonder he finds her attractive at all. It is interesting how many of these Hong Kong films show opulent living when there cannot be such spacious living quarters for most of its citizens. It as if the filmmakers have an obsession with showing what most cannot have. Perhaps that is part of the fantasy of making movies is to portray the unattainable. Or maybe it is some kind of propaganda. I hope they can move pass this to provide more common person interest stories living in cramped spaces trying to etch out a living while being challenged to maintain their core values.
