  • Interesting exploration of bad comedy

A niche documentary about a group of working comedians who are having trouble finding audiences to appreciate their art. An eventful road trip brings them into contact with stateside audiences culminating in a surprising tryout at the Laugh Factory. The routines of the comedians themselves are mediocre on some nights, straight-up offensive on others. If you like uncomfortable, cringe-worthy scenes of stand-up, then this is for you. On the other hand, the comedians themselves are real people struggling in a hard profession. It's a very real movie that showcases the challenges faced by working comics. These are not top-tier comedians but it's a very realistic look at being a working comedian. If you're just starting out in comedy, this could be a useful and insightful film for you.

  • When life is no joke u gotta make it one

Sometimes life is No Joke but you have to laugh your way through the worst parts to stay sane. This beautiful documentary will make you cry through sadness of the struggle and through laughter at the these three witty comedians. You can't help but fall in love with these comedians as beautiful people as you learn about their life and struggle and laugh at their jokes. Ali brings realness, showing raw beautiful emotion on screen as he relives his past. James brings swag, always high energy smiling and brings a vital light attitude to the movie. Vibrato brings freakiness, fearlessness abs extreme individuality. Dj brings reliability raw emotion and an unparallelled passion to comedy dispute the sacrifices. Knowing the Vancouver comedy industry I think this is an accurate description of the life of most our comedians... And the deserve respect for following their dreams... All to make us laugh and in turn improve our lives... Laughter is the best medicine. If you want to watch something real about the struggle about the celebration of life this is the movie to watch, so, do yourself a favour...NO JOKE

  • No Joking Matter: this movie is a gem

If the word 'documentary' causes you to switch the channel than "No Joke" will help you find love for the genre. "No Joke" feels and moves like a comedy, a drama, and an adventure movie - even the cinematography is beautiful. I laughed aloud, I cried and I learned something about my own humanity. (I'll leave that for you to discover. No spoiler alerts here). "No Joke" takes audiences on an adventure from Vancouver, Canada to the U.S., following three comedians whose passion and obsession with their craft is rooted in much deeper psychological and emotional realities. The three characters, DG, Vibrato, James Brown and Ali are fantastic, raw, flawed and make no apologies for the lengths they will go to defend their craft. It's absolutely admirable, even if you cringe at times. The story organically examines how 'passion' functions in the human condition. Director Matt Frame is an incredible storyteller. You know this because of the element of surprise in the story. "No Joke" keeps you wanting more all the way to the very end, which comes together in the ultimate climax. This movie is a gem.

  • Interesting take on stand up comedy

    whoompthereitis2013-06-21

Watching 'No Joke' was interesting. I liked seeing the personalities of the three main characters, and I found James Brown (great name!) to be in particular fairly entertaining, and not just in an ironic way. The film did a good job of letting the viewer get to know the characters, with one small omission: I didn't really feel like I got a sense of just how long they had been doing comedy. I recall one line where DJ Roy mentioned he'd been at it for about 10 years, but I don't recall getting much context for how long James Brown and Ali Hemraj had been at it. If it was there, I missed it. Another issue I had with the film is that at no point did the comedians get a chance to do their thing in front of a real live comedy club crowd. The chance to perform in front of Jamie Masata at The Laugh Factory was a good ending, but the fact that they were playing to an empty room made the whole thing kind of anticlimactic. After a whole film of the boys playing in hostile coffee shops and underground clubs, it would have been nice to see them take what they'd learned and apply it in front of a more 'receptive' audience. I understand that Jamie does all his auditions that way, but so much of stand up comedy is the dynamic with the audience, and so at the end I kind of felt like the boys hadn't really been given their due. Still really enjoyed the film though, and would suggest it to any fan of stand up comedy or documentaries in general.

  • Great concept

Standup comedy is such a popular form of entertainment its surprising sometimes how few documentaries tackle the subject. As an amateur comic myself I watched what I could find when I was starting out and gained some insight. I wish that No Joke had have been out at that time. The films premise (that 3 of Vancouver's least funny comics could be funny in a different market) is unique and original but in the end this is really a story about personalities. The personalities in the film are all interesting guys on their own (Vibrato is a real character!) but their interplay makes the movie. Don't watch the film expecting to laugh your ass off (although there are funny parts). Instead see what its like to be on the road as a travelling comic. Some of the open mic nights the crew do on their road trip are good examples of where you'll end up performing if you were to try your hand at stand up. I encourage you to give this movie a watch, part road trip movie, part character study, its entertaining and you can tell a lot of the director's heart and soul went into it.
